Additional site closures announced by PWS - Tuesday 29 January, 12:30pm

29/01/2019

Access to some national parks and reserve areas is being managed for public safety by PWS due to the current fire situation.

Due to the ongoing threat of fires in a number of areas around the state, PWS advises the following:

·         Mt Field National Park is being closed today (Tuesday 29 January) and will remain closed tomorrow (Wednesday 30 January) and Thursday 31 January 2019.

·               This closure is earlier than previously anticipated but the decision to do so has been made on advice from the Incident Management Team. PWS will re-evaluate the situation on Thursday afternoon and will advise in due course.

·         A number of walking tracks in Freycinet National Park are being temporarily closed today (Tuesday 29 January) from 3pm until midnight due to the risk of walkers becoming trapped in the case of wildfire these include:

Wineglass Bay lookout & Wineglass beach

Mt Amos

Hazards beach & peninsula walking tracks

Isthmus Walking track

South Friendly 4WD track

·         Due to extreme fire danger, the Douglas Aspley National Park is also being closed from 3pm today (Tuesday 29th January) until 9am Thursday 31st January.

For a complete list of track, area and campground closures please visit www.parks.tas.gov.au/closures

With the large amount of fires burning and the potential for spotting and new starts due to the weather forecast, PWS are asking people NOT to venture into remote areas.

As fires under hot, dry and windy conditions can travel very fast, it’s important for visitors to stay informed in case conditions change.
