Progress on Frenchmans Cap Track upgrade


Track work on the Frenchmans Cap Track in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area has finished for the summer season, with substantial progress achieved in maintenance of the existing track and on construction of a new section of track.

Parks and Wildlife Service general manager Peter Mooney said that works to upgrade the track began last year following the donation of $100,000 per year for 10 years to the WILDCARE Gift Fund by Australian businessman Dick Smith in 2008. In turn, the Tasmanian Government committed to contributing at least $50,000 each year for the same period.

Mr Mooney said that in 2009 the Frenchmans Cap Walking Track Management Plan was produced to provide strategic direction for the track’s upgrading for the 10 year period.

“Construction of a section of new track in a re-route of the southern section of the notoriously muddy Loddon Plains was a key component of the plan,” he said.

“Rangers, field officers and track workers topped up the gravel surface, installed small sections of boardwalk or double-planking and steps on the North Loddon Plains section of track. They also cleared vegetation, improved drainage and completed revegetation works.”

Work also began on the new re-route, with a mini-excavator helping to cut and drain the new track. The track includes sections of gravel, double-planking and boardwalk. One eight metre long bridge has been put in place, with another to be built next season.
