Fuel reduction burns planned for Bruny Island

31/10/2005

The Parks and Wildlife Service will undertake fuel reduction burns on Bruny Island this week as part of its fire management strategy.

Parks and Wildlife Service general manager, Peter Mooney said that the burns will be undertaken by Parks and Wildlife Service staff at Adventure Bay and at the Quarantine Station State Reserve.

An area of Crown land on the corner of Davis Road and Killora Road, North Bruny Island will also be burned. The total area of the burns in the Quarantine Station area is about 10 hectares.

"The aim of the burns is to reduce fuel loads around the Quarantine Station and at the public reserve at Adventure Bay.

"Fuel reduction burning is part of the Parks and Wildlife Service strategy to protect public and surrounding land from the adverse effects of bushfires.

"Fuel reduction burning increases the chance of early fire suppression and provides a safer environment for firefighters during bushfires. It also presents an opportunity to learn more about fire behaviour and for staff to practice their fire fighting skills and gain further experience."

Further information on the Bruny Island burns can be obtained from the Parks and Wildlife Service Huonville office on 6264 8460.
