Macquarie Island has three species of Colobanthus. All are small herbs. C. apetalus has rosettes of narrow tapered leaves with a small spine at the tip of each leaf, it grows as a mat in boggy areas. C. affinis has a similar growth form but with does not grow in colonies and occurs on exposed high elevation sites. C. muscoides is a common coastal species with rosettes of broad triangular leaves, growing in colonies which form a mat or cushion.
