A contemplative stroll around the evocative remains of the Coal Mines Historic Site will bring you closer to the experiences of the people who lived and worked here so long ago.

These silent, stone buildings you are seeing include the east wing of the prisoner's barracks (to the left), which contained tiny solitary cells in the basement. You can still enter these cells. In doing so, you will gain an impression of the cramped conditions prisoners in solitary must have faced.

In the center, stands the chapel. You can still see its ornamental stonework.

The red convict brick structure in the background is the officer's quarters.
