Three Capes Track
The Three Capes Track will be a signature
overnight walking experience for the Tasman,
and Tasmania. It will also transform the Tasman
National Park as a destination for day walking.
Growth in day walking will be generated by
promotion, word-of-mouth and media exposure
for the Three Capes Track, and by significant
improvements in tracks and facilities built for it.
Classic Tasmanian examples of this phenomenon
include the day walking hubs that have developed
at Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair, and the
Gordon River cruises of Strahan. The former
owe much to the reputation of the Overland
Track, the latter to the Franklin River rafting
experience and conservation campaigns.
Simply put, many people will want a taste, but not
necessarily the full adventure. They will undertake
day, half-day and very short walks to satisfy their
desire to experience these stunning places.
Creation of the Three Capes Track will see new
or improved entry points to the Tasman National
Park at White Beach, Remarkable Cave and
Fortescue Bay. It will also lead to improvements to
the Shipstern Bluff / Cape Raoul trailhead.
These existing trailheads currently provide
access to several distinct day walking
experiences, three of which are among
Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks.
The new trailheads and track development for
the Three Capes Track will provide numerous
new day walk opportunities in the area, as well
as significantly improving existing day walks.
The entire length of the Three Capes Track
will be available for day walkers in the same
way as existing tracks are - no bookings - just
your walking gear and park entry pass, and off
you go.
The Three Capes Track will be a boon for
access and participation in day walking on the
Tasman. Combined with the growth in sea
wildlife tours, and the emergence in recent
years of one of the world’s most famous surf
breaks at Shipstern Bluff, it will help make
the Tasman a destination synonymous with
wild, nature-based activity - a great place to
experience some of the best of Tasmania’s
wild places.
