The Parks and Wildlife Service wishes to advise that the Maria Island Ferry and Eco Cruises will not be operating its ferry service to Maria Island during the period 23rd June to 14 July, 2009.

Please Note: The Maria Island Ferry and Eco Cruises has advised that it will not be operating its ferry service to Maria Island during the period Tuesday 23 June to Tuesday 14 July 2009 inclusive to facilitate ferry servicing and maintenance. The island itself is still open to the public. Alternate methods of access to the island are available such as boat and light aircraft charter services as well as by private vessel.

Maria Island can only be reached by boat or plane. To reach Triabunna (the nearest town on the coast near Maria Island) from Hobart, drive on the A3 road to Sorell and then on towards Orford on Tasmania's east coast. This drive takes approximately one and a half hours. From Launceston, take the Midlands Highway (A1) south to Campbell Town, the B34 to Swansea, and the A3 to Triabunna. It takes about two and a half hours from Launceston.

Important points for visitors:

  • Triabunna is about 90 minutes drive from Hobart
  • Passengers are reminded that Maria Island is a National Park and that park entry fees apply upon arrival.
  • There are no shops on the island so visitors are required to bring their own food, warm gear, etc. There are shops in Triabunna.
