Franklin River Nature Trail cleared and resurfaced

23/06/2014

The Franklin River Nature Trail on the Lyell Highway, is in great shape following a program of track clearing and resurfacing by Parks and Wildlife Service staff and contractors.

Northwest Region ranger Ben Hill said the track, one of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks, was popular with visitors.

“The walk receives between 1,000 to 2,500 visits each week, with greater numbers using the picnic grounds and toilet facilities,” Ben said.

“It’s a beautiful walk past the running rivers, with the lush greens of the rainforest interspersed with splashes of reds, yellow and blues of fungi on the forest floor.”

About half of the 1.2 km track was re-surfaced after staff removed years of accumulated moss and grass growth from the picnic grounds and a contractor removed several dangerous trees. Sixty tonnes of gravel was then spread and firmed up with a wacker packer. Regional staff involved included Ben Murphy, Gary Cole, James Mundy, Nathan Secombe and Adam Reading.
