Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area Consultative Committee (TWWHACC)
The TWWHACC was formed in 1985 to assist the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area Ministerial Council and the managing agencies, the Parks and Wildlife Service, Forestry Tasmania and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Land and Sea Council.
The committee consists of 16 members - seven appointed by the Tasmanian Government, seven appointed by the Australian Government, and the Chair and a Conservation Advocate appointed by agreement between the two Governments. Members provide expertise on ecology, archaeology, earth science and park management outside Tasmania and represent interests such as bushwalking, conservation, freshwater anglers, established practices, tourism, adventure tourism, trade unions and local government.
The committee meets four times a year – two lots of three day meetings in the summer months which include field trips to consider key issues in the TWWHA and two winter meetings over two days, generally held in Hobart.
The committee’s main function is to provide advice to the Tasmanian World Heritage Area Ministerial Council on matters relating to the management of the TWWHA. Issues are occasionally referred by the Ministerial Council but most often the agenda is developed by the managers of the area. In addition, the committee has the ability to raise any matter it thinks relevant.
