National
Parks and Wildlife Advisory Council
The National Parks and Wildlife Advisory Council (NPWAC) is a statutory body providing an independent overview of Tasmania's protected areas system and strategic advice to the Minister.
The NPWAC was established in 1971 under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1970 (the Act). The functions of the NPWAC as set out in the National Parks and Reserves Management Act 2002 are:
(a) to advise the Minister on the administration of the Act, including matters referred to it by the Minister;
(b) to provide a forum for consultation on policy issues of State significance that are related to the Act;
(c) to maintain an overview of the relevance of the Director of National Parks and Wildlife's role and achievements relative to public expectations;
(d) to promote understanding and acceptance of the Director of National Parks and Wildlife's role and associated programs;
(e) to encourage, and act as a focal point for, community support for projects carried out and services provided under the Act; and
(f) to review management plans for reserved land.
Members
Members of the NPWAC are appointed in their own right rather than as a representative of any particular organisation. The members bring a breadth of experience and expertise spanning rural land management, primary industries, outdoor recreation, tourism, conservation, environmental science, sustainable tourism, cultural heritage, World Heritage management, traditional users, forest management and Aboriginal community.
