Macquarie Island Eradication Project

MIrabbit07.jpg Rabbits and rats are posing a severe threat to World Heritage values on Macquarie Island, as research reveals widespread damage to terrestrial ecosystems. These impacts include devastating effects upon native fauna, flora, geomorphology, natural landscape values and nutrient recycling systems.

A Draft Plan for the Eradication of Rabbits and Rodents on Subantarctic Macquarie Island has been developed to achieve the restoration of Macquarie Island’s biodiversity and natural systems as much as possible.

The Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service pest eradication team is on its way to the island to do some preliminary work on this major project. Travelling with the team and its steering committee are two VIPs integral to a successful outcome, two lively springer spaniels bred and trained to find and flush out rabbits in this sub-Antarctic wilderness. You can follow the journey on the Macquarie Island Pest Eradication Project Blog.
